EU Parliament Adopts Marrakesh Treaty

The European Parliament with over 600 votes adopted the legal instruments to ratify the Marrakesh Treaty on access to reading material for the visually impaired. The treaty, adopted by the members of the World Intellectual Property Organization in 2013 is effective since last year. It has been subject of controversies due to lobbying from publishers in the European Union. EU member states will have one year to implement.

Accessing Higher Ground: The 2nd Call for Proposals for 2017

The Accessing Higher Ground conference (November 13-17, 2017) focuses on the implementation and benefits of:

  • Accessible media, Universal Design and Assistive Technology in the university, business and public setting
  • Legal and policy issues, including ADA and 508 compliance
  • The creation of accessible media and information resources, including Web pages and library resources

There is a strong focus on campus accommodation, Universal Design and curriculum accessibility.

Australia's copyright reform could bring millions of books to the blind

Proposed changes to Australia’s copyright law should make it easier to create and distribute versions of copyrighted works that are accessible to people with disabilities.

The Copyright Amendment (Disability Access and other Measures) Bill was introduced to Parliament.

International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD), December 3rd, 2016

The United Nation’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) has been celebrated annually on December 3rd around the world since 1992.

The theme for 2016 is “Achieving Seventeen Goals for the Future We Want”. This theme notes the recent adoption of the Seventeen Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the role of these goals in building a more inclusive and equitable world for persons with disabilities.

The modern conventions for reading mathematical notation out loud have evolved over time, motivated by the desire to improve the quality of mathematical instructional materials. Abraham Nemeth publicly shared his MathSpeak guidelines (1995), which have since been further expanded and refined through the MathSpeak Initiative (2004).
